Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) - An important update from Unity Center on 3/17/2020
Assalamu 'Alaikum Dear Community Members:
We begin in the name Allah, our Creator, Sustainer, Protector and Provider. We testify that there is No God Worthy of Worship but Him. Whatever Allah decrees, we accept and ask Him to give us strength and patience to endure.
As you all know on Monday, March 16, Los Angeles County Public Health Officer provided new orders to mitigate and prevent the spread of Covid-19. These orders require that any events and gatherings of 50 people or more are prohibited at least until April 1, 2020. For all public and private events and gatherings of 10-49 persons, the Health Officer requires enforcement of social distancing measures by requiring attendees or groups of attendees to be separated by a distance of at least six feet during the entirety of the event or gathering. In light of these developments and the extensive impact on the health and well-being of our communities, neighbors and society at large, we must take cautionary measures to protect our own health and the health of all those with whom we interact.
Alhamdulillah, following the guidelines issued by Shura Council of Southern California, AMJA (Assembly of Muslim Jurists of America), directives issued by State Governor as well as the Los Angeles County Public Health Officer, and consultation with the leadership of the neighboring mosques and a panel of physicians, we will be temporarily suspending the Friday, Jumma prayers for the next two weeks, on 3/20/2020 and on 3/27/2020. We are requesting the community members to pray Zuhr at home instead. After the two-week period we will reassess the situation to determine the possibility of resuming the prayer.
We ask Allah to accept this decision based on our intention to look out for the greater good of the community. May Allah almighty guide us and save our communities and nation from harm. We ask Him the most merciful to grant patience, strength, and recovery to all who are suffering from this pandemic. We pray that this solidifies our ranks and increases us in faith, coming closer to our Lord. Ameen.
Please note all social and community events at Unity Center have been cancelled until further notice. The Center will only be open for daily salah for individuals – however, vulnerable sections of the community (ages 65 and above, little children and people with illness) are strongly discouraged from coming. We would like to encourage those coming to five daily prayers to take extra precaution and pray at home if concerned about contact with others. Those with health situation are particularly encouraged to pray at home until the situation improves.
This is a difficult time and your support and cooperation would be greatly appreciated during this time. Please continue to donate generously to cover Unity Center’s monthly expenses. You can donate via PayPal on this site, mail in check (to Unity Center address below) or putting cash/check in donation boxes in the Masjid during five daily prayer times.
